Simpler, faster experience for the mobile web version of Google Drive

We’ve simplified the UI for the mobile web version of Google Drive, making it easier for people to access their files more quickly.

People accessing the new mobile web version of Drive will be able to view, download and print their files. However, to optimize the feature experience, they will be directed to download the new Drive and Docs editor apps for document creation and editing.

The new version is rolling out over the next several days. Visit http://drive.google.com from your mobile browser to give it a try.

New UI for all Google Drive pickers

We have launched a new UI for all Google Drive pickers--the interface that allows people to select and insert content stored in Google Drive (e.g. Insert files from Drive, Insert Images from Drive, etc). The UI will closely align with the new Google Drive UI, and will move all menu options from vertical tabs on the left side of the picker to horizontal tabs running along the top of the picker.

Simplified sharing experience for Google Docs editors and Google Drive

We have launched a new simplified sharing experience for the Google Docs editors and Google Drive, making it easier for people to find and copy the link for a file or folder to share with others.

To give access to your content to others, click the blue “Share” button (or select a file/folder in Drive and click the person icon), and you’ll see a new “Get shareable link” button and grey icon in the upper right corner of the pop-up window. With one click on “Get shareable link,” you’ll see your file’s link appear and that the icon turns from grey to green, meaning that the file is ready to be shared with view-only access.

If you want anyone with the link to do more with your file, like leave comments and suggestions or make edits, just change “Can view” to “Can comment” or “Can edit” in the dropdown. And as always, if you only want certain people to be able to view, comment on, or edit your file, add their email addresses and we’ll send them a link that only they can access.

A new version of the Google Drive app for iOS is now available in the App Store, containing the following features:

• Faster syncing
• New upload experience that shows progress and destination

Changes to legacy Google Drive URLs

As initially mentioned last month, in line with the new Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides home screens we announced in June, we’ll now start redirecting docs.google.com to point to the new Google Docs home screen instead of to Google Drive. You can always get to Google Drive by going to drive.google.com.

Those with docs.google.com bookmarked as a way to access Google Drive should update their links accordingly. We will be showing a notification to users in both Drive and Docs to remind them of this change.

View event support in Google Drive audit logs

Currently, Google Apps Unlimited customers are able to access Drive audit logs using the Reports API and in the 'Audit' section of the Admin console reports. The current Drive audit logs include events such as create, upload, edit, rename, move, add to folder, remove from folder, trash, delete and untrash. We are now adding view event support to the Drive audit logs.

View event will cover file views for Google and non-Google file formats. Admins will also be able to filter on view events and combine that with other filtering criteria like document name, user name and timestamp.

Optimize the experience working with Office files on your Chromebook

People using Chrome OS on the latest versions (36.0.1985.138 or 36.0.1985.126), and who are opted-in to the new Drive UI, can now edit Office files natively from Drive and Gmail. They will also experience greater stability and rendering fidelity for files. 

If your organization manages updates for Chrome, be sure to update to the latest Chrome OS versions to get the best experience working with Office files on your Chromebook.

New version of Google Drive viewer

As part of the new Google Drive, we are updating Drive’s viewer. The new viewer is faster, cleaner and provides easier ways to connect with third-party Drive apps. It also brings a unified viewing experience across Drive content and Gmail attachments. Note that as part of this change we will remove support for adding file-level commenting of non-Google file formats. This change doesn’t impact comments in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, and existing comments on non-Google formats will be retained and available to view. Release track:

Changes to legacy Google Drive URLs

Currently, there are two urls one can use to reach Google Drive--docs.google.com and drive.google.com. In line with the new Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides home screens we announced recently, we’ll be redirecting docs.google.com to point to the new Google Docs home screen, where you can see a list of your most recent Google Docs files. Of course, you can always get to Google Drive by going to drive.google.com.

The launch of the new home screens for Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides on the web to rapid release domains will be complete on July 18, and we’ll start the launch to scheduled release domains on July 22nd. The change to legacy Google Drive urls will come a couple of weeks later to rapid release domains, followed by scheduled release domains two weeks later.

Transfer ownership of Drive files before deleting a user

To help prevent the accidental deletion of Drive files when deleting a user, admins will now be prompted to optionally transfer ownership of any files owned by the user. Admins can choose to transfer all files the user owns or only shared files they own. If the user is deleted without transferring the user’s Drive files, Google deletes the files the user owned within five days. Release track:

Restore a user's Google Drive files

Admins can now restore a given user’s deleted Google Drive files for a specified date range. This helps ensure that, if a user accidentally deletes important files, those files are not permanently lost. The feature pertains to files that have been emptied from the Trash only. Files still in the Trash can be easily recovered by the user.

Better document and image viewing experience in Gmail and Google Drive

We've launched a new version of the UI for viewing documents and images in Gmail and Google Drive to give more focus to the content itself. The tool bar has moved to the top (and disappears when not in use) and the document/image frame is now wider, giving users a more streamlined experience.

Activity view, link sharing and more in the new Google Drive mobile apps

The Google Drive mobile apps for Android and iOS now have a cleaner design, more responsive animations, and faster background syncing. Sharing your files is also simpler and faster. Key features include:

• Activity view: a stream of changes to your files and folders, accessible through the details panel
• Link sharing: easily share files and folders directly from the mobile app using a link

A faster, redesigned Google Drive

Google Drive will have a new look and speedier performance on the desktop, making organizing and sharing files faster and easier than ever. Users can now right click on a file to see recent activity, set sharing permissions, and enable files to be accessed while offline. When selecting multiple files, users can take actions on the entire group in three ways—right click on the selection, use the menu above the file area, or simply drag the group to move to a new folder location.

This new version is rolling out progressively to rapid release domains, who can opt-in and try the new features and interface. Scheduled release domains will be able to opt-in soon. The plan is to rollout the new Drive interface to everyone in the near future.

Unlimit your business with Google Drive for Work

Today at Google I/O we announced Google Drive for Work—a new premium offering for businesses that includes unlimited storage, advanced audit reporting and new security controls.

Key features:

• unlimited storage for all employees, including files up to 5 TB in size
• new audit reporting so admins can see activity like moving, deleting or sharing files within or outside the company, plus an audit API that makes this data available to developers
• new security controls so admins can set sync client, offline, Drive app and add-on settings at the Organizational Unit (OU)-level
• includes Google Apps Vault, which has been expanded to provide search for all content stored in Drive

We’re also happy to announce that all files uploaded to Google Drive will now be encrypted for all users (consumer and Google Apps alike) -- so your content is encrypted not only from your device to Google and in transit between Google data centers, but also at rest on Google servers.

Google Drive for Work is now available for new and existing Google Apps for Business customers for $10/user/month, under a new SKU called Google Apps Unlimited.

Domain management of Google Drive Apps

Last year, we launched a new and improved Google Apps Marketplace experience, allowing admins to be able to find, manage and deploy third-party applications directly from the Google Apps Admin Console.

Earlier this year, we launched the ability for admins to allow their users to install applications that integrate with Google Drive. If this setting was disabled, however, admins were not able to install Marketplace apps that integrate with Drive.

With today’s launch, Marketplace applications deployed by admins will be able to integrate with Google Drive for users who are provided with the app, even if this Admin Console setting is disabled. In essence, admins can now whitelist the Drive applications that their users can install.
